Science is the systematic way that humans use try to make sense and understand the world around us. Scientists begin by observing and recording in an accurate way to gain that understanding. They also conduct experiments to enhance that understanding and to turn that knowledge into useful ideas and products.
Our teachers believe it is essential that all students receive a solid grounding in current scientific understandings, values and skills for them to function in our modern world that is increasingly shaped by the application of Science to nearly every aspect of daily life.
Students at all levels have opportunities to participate in local and international activities and competitions and are actively supported by staff. We are proud of our record of success. In the last few years Year 9s have germinated seeds in tandem with scientists on the International Space Station. Year 9s and 10s participate annually very successfully in the EducationPerfect Science Championships in 2017 we were the first globally for schools of our size.. Older students participate in Brain Bee, ChemQuest and the NZIC Analytical Chemistry Competition. Year 7s and 8s have had enormous fun building Rube Goldberg machines in the Young Innovators Award Can Do Challenge. Both junior and senior participate in the ICAS Science competitions.
Students have participated recently in field trips to the Waitomo limestone caves and the Taupo Volcanic Zone to study geology, the Aongatete Forest to observe pest control and to Mt Maungatautari to study takahē ecology.
