Horticulture

We are changing the way we prepare our students who are interested in a career in the horticulture industry in New Zealand by offering a course that is innovative, responsive to industry requirements, reflects the skills needed in the industry, and offers both practical on the job work experience, as well as school supported curriculum and assessment.

The table belowshows our new proposed programme for 2019. It has opportunities for students wishing to go straight into industry, those seeking cadetships and further training, and those looking to go onto university and then a career in the horticulture sector.

The programme will evolve to be increasingly modular and flexible, having the ability to respond to the individual learner’s career pathway and ability. Level 3 options will be added in 2020.

Students, parents and caregivers are encouraged to contact Hilary Johnson for more information at hjohnson@katikaticollege.school.nz

We welcome any offers of support to help us deliver this new initiative.

Academic Pathway

You design your own Achievement Standard course by selecting a combination of standards from those offered at your level (1 or 2) that meet your needs. These should add up to 16 to 20 credits. When you do not have scheduled teaching time you will be working independently with supervision in the learning area that supports your current focus.

Practical Pathway

Unit Standard courses have core component, but off-site options are also available. Because of the practical nature of the course, many standards run for most of the year.
